Local guitar mama Brandy Robinson (she runs the Guitar Mama record label, so it's OK to call her that) will throw a little funk, soul, and reggae into her folkie jams at Barley's Taproom this weekend. Here's the music she's been listening to as she gets ready to record her third album.
Little Jackie, The Stoop (S-Curve, 2008)
I love her sound! She has a fresh take on the old-style soul with new pop-hop. I can put her CD in and be in a better mood instantly.
Missy Higgins, On a Clear Night (Eleven, 2007)
This lady has such an amazing grasp on songwriting. She inspires me to write very real, heartfelt songs. Her voice is sultry and she is definitely an artist on the rise.
Wale, The Mixtape About Nothing (2008)
Taking hip-hop to the next level. I love the beats he is working with and he has such a smooth style.
All of his music! I have listened to him for years, and this year I got to play with him at Sundown in the City. It definitely made me realize something about accomplishment.
Passafire, Passafire (2006)
They are great friends of mine. The Savannah, Ga., band mixes reggae/dub/rock better than most on the scene and they are definitely coming up quick in it. I love supporting independent music. That is what I do and I hope people out there will keep coming to the live shows to see great new music.
