Eating by the shore is one of life’s finest rewards—everything tastes fresh, natural, healthy and, of course, delicious. Sadly, it’s not so easy to pop over to the beach anytime you’re in the mood for fresh seafood, and there are a precious few spots close to home that can offer an experience of similar quality. Fortunately Knoxville is not only gifted with one restaurant that can make you feel close to the shore, it now has two.
Shuck Raw Bar changed the city’s seafood options forever for the better when it opened in Gay Street’s 100 Block, offering a mind-blowing selection of raw oysters, fresh seafood, and beautifully constructed fish dishes. Their Citrus Tuna Crudo and Tuna Tower were instant hits that demonstrated impeccable taste and a savvy eye for presentation. Of course, with an array of options from prime oyster beds far and wide, the raw bar selection was unparalleled in Knoxville’s restaurant history.
Now that the Gay Street restaurant is an established favorite, Shuck has opened a second location in Bearden’s Homberg Place at the corner of Mohican and Kingston Pike across from its sister concept, Nama Sushi Bar. The quality and diversity of the menu is equally excellent in both places; yet the Bearden location has the benefit of a full-size restaurant kitchen, which allows it to expand its offerings. The menu will include burger and steak options, as well as Oysters Rockefeller, seared Ahi, and more fish like salmon and mahi and other seafood available hot from the grill.
Of course, both spots continue to offer a mouth-watering selection of good stuff in the form of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and soup. Shuck’s Salt N’ Pepper Calamari comes with tomato puttanesca sauce or what may very well be the finest incarnation of Green Goddess dressing ever made. And if you haven’t tried Shuck’s New England Style Clam Chowder, then you’re missing out on something wonderful. There are five different kinds of seafood Po Boys available, five varieties of fish tacos, and some of the finest fried oysters imaginable.
Still, the centerpiece of this restaurant remains the raw bar—and the Bearden location will do that up in style. It’s a gleaming, stainless steel oyster bar where guests can sit, watch, and dine just like they might do at the coast. And, of course, the menu board will continue to display offerings of prized raw selections.
Shuck also features an interesting selection of wines from around the world. And the Bearden bar will showcase Prohibition-style classic cocktails like Sazerac and Ramos Gin Fizz, as well as offering a wide slate of beer that will include a host of local and regional selections.
