A lake-view restaurant whose mainstays are pizza and pasta? The time has come. The Willow Point Marina setting and the picture window views of the Little Tennessee River are just the same as when this place was Kiger’s Restaurant, but now the fare is Ameri-Italian, with chewy, cornmeal-dusted pizza crust and savory pastas, and even a mix-and-match lunch buffet.
“I grew up in Ohio, and a chain called Cassano’s is big in Dayton—that was my goal when we were developing our sauce, to make it flavored like Cassano’s,” says manager Jeanine Barton, who also oversees the marina where Pier Pizza makes its home. “It’s thicker than most, and zesty, though I’ve developed a way to keep the acidity down.”
Some of the best of the old Kiger’s menu has been preserved, from the fried dill pickle starters to the homemade chunky chip served with subs. The tradition of diners arriving by boat is still going strong, too.
Innovations aimed at establishing a year-round atmosphere on the waterfront include a kids’ menu that actually involves some fruit, a 100-something-inch projection screen for family night movies, music on request along with videos played on the mega-screen, and a draft-and-domestic bottles happy hour that kicks off at 11 a.m. and plays out until 7 p.m.
Oh, yeah, and Pier Pizza delivers, within a five mile range of the restaurant—and down to the end of the dock. “We deliver to boats,” says Barton. “If you call ahead and pull into the marina, we’ll run your pizza out.”
