While Little Szechuan offers very authentic renditions of Chinese dishes like beef brisket in a clay pot, red snapper with bean paste, or homestyle tofu, its big attraction is dim sum, filling a Knoxville culinary gap. It has a wide-ranging menu of options, from small to large, including Turnip Cake, Garlic Chives Pan Cake, or Rice Rolls with Shrimp. On weekdays, the kitchen closes at 2:30 p.m. and reopens at 5 p.m. Closed Tuesday.
From the YUMMM! Restaurant Guide:
Little Szechuan is Knoxville’s newest Chinese restaurant, and after enjoying the delicious dim sum it’s quickly becoming known for, it will immediately become your favorite. Owner Ken Liao moved here from Atlanta just last month, relocating Little Szechuan from Doraville, Ga., to its current location on Kingston Pike, where it opened in June. Liao is proud to have brought more authentic Chinese cuisine to Knoxville.
“I think most people think we’re just another Chinese restaurant,” Liao says. “But we’re not doing buffets, and though we have beef and broccoli on our menu, that’s not what the restaurant is about.”
Little Szechuan’s menu boasts a variety of authentic Chinese dishes that would be hard to find in other Knoxville restaurants, including Shrimp With Spicy Garlic Sauce and Three Cup Chicken. “Some of our most popular items are extremely authentic, like the Crispy Tea Duck and the Spicy Lung Slice,” says Liao.
The real highlight of Little Szechuan’s menu, however, is the dim sum: small portions of Chinese specialties prepared in a steam basket and priced by the plate. The restaurant currently offers around 40 varieties, and Liao says he definitely plans on increasing that number. He says the Pork Shrimp Sil Myl and the pork rice rolls are among the top-selling dim sum varieties. Liao personally recommends the stewed spare ribs, and the garlic shrimp rolls are particularly delicious. The high quality of Little Szechuan’s dim sum is no surprise: the restaurant’s dim sum chef has over 30 years of experience preparing it. And because dim sum is priced by the plate, it’s easy to enjoy a few different varieties without overspending.
With the level of quality and variety in Chinese cuisine that Little Szechuan has brought to Knoxville, this new restaurant won’t stay a secret long.
