The French Market uses both traditional and buckwheat flour imported from France and cast-iron crêpe burners to make perfect crêpes, with all manner of luscious fillings, both sweet and savory. Have a made-to-order omelette for a tasty breakfast, or enjoy an imported croissant and a cup of flavorful Lavazza coffee for a quick snack. Other options include French onion soup and croissant sandwiches. Also now serving a fine selection of 14 imported beers and hard ciders.
From Yummm!, the Metro Pulse Restaurant Guide:
What has become one of Downtown Knoxville’s most popular restaurant and tourist destinations? The French Market Crêperie, but of course! The experience has been compared to “a trip to France without the airfare.” It begins outside with the cute covered patio where Parisian-style tables and chairs invite you to sit under the umbrellas and watch the city go by, with classic French and jazz music playing in the background. Then you open the door to the scent of sweet and savory crêpes cooking on the griddles, brewed espresso, and baking pastries. Notice the décor, the artwork and ambience inside… You have arrived to a unique dining experience found nowhere else in Knoxville.
The French Market Crêperie was created by owners Allen and Susan Tate, who spent several winters living in a Paris peid-à-terre and wanted to replicate their experience of good food in a casual atmosphere at a good price. Now in their fourth year, their Crêperie features more than 40 sweet and savory crêpes along with baguette and croissant sandwiches, soups, and French pastries.
The French Market Crêperie has many menu combinations to tempt you—basics from the popular Ham & Cheese to favorites like Turkey Spinach and Artichoke, the Veggie Deluxe on a buckwheat crêpe, the Roast Beef & Swiss with horseradish sauce, or the best-selling Smoked Salmon crêpes. On Thursdays you’ll find the “Bistro Special” that has recently featured a Turkey Breast & Brie crêpe with fresh baby spinach, roasted Portobello Mushrooms and Red Peppers, a Roasted Chicken with Broccoli crêpe topped with Béchamel sauce, and the Roast Beef with Asparagus and Béarnaise. Coming again this fall and winter, their homemade get-it-while-you-can Beef Bourguignon Stew served with crusty just-baked French bread. There are lots of options on the menu for all, including five vegetarian crêpes.
Of course, you’ll find the classic French crêpes available every day: Nutella and Banana, Crêpes Suzette or Parisian-style Ham and Cheese, but many you may not have heard of… Goat Cheese & Walnuts, Sautéed Mushroom and Cheese, the Monte Cristo, Chestnut Butter or Bavarian Crème….just a few of the many touches that draw visiting Europeans, tourists and your neighbors to the Crêperie again and again. Once you try one you’ll be back for more!
Open for breakfast every day, with their brunch menu on Saturdays till noon and all day Sunday a downtown tradition. Customers really enjoy their breakfast crêpes with eggs, bacon, or sausage, and veggies, incredible omlettes, breakfast croissants, and the house specialty, Crêpes Benedict. And of course, they serve the best-selling coffee and espresso in Europe: LavAzza!
Featured in Southern Living Magazine in May of this year and chosen by Cityview Magazine as one of the top restaurants in Knoxville, The French Market Crepêrie is open daily for breakfast and lunch, Wednesday & Thursday evenings until 9 p.m. and Friday & Saturday until 10 p.m.
