East Japanese Restaurant

Back in Knoxville’s culinary Dark Ages of 1994, Yoshio Takeuchi was one of the first to introduce authentic Japanese sushi as the head sushi chef at Kyoto, now Misaki. Thirteen years later, the trend is a restaurant staple, and Takeuchi’s back with East Japanese Restaurant to deliver more stellar sushi, from a spicy “Knox fashion” roll to an eye-catching caterpillar roll of eel, avocado and cucumber. But that’s not the only draw at this serenely designed teak-and-Feng Shui dining room cradled in Farragut’s Village Green Shopping Center (near Stein Mart and the Fresh Market).

“We have developed combinations for the person who wants to try many items,” explains Takeuchi, and the result is a familiar standard such as chicken teriyaki or sashimi arrayed with tempura, California roll, a green salad Japanese-style and rice and soup, all for a single modest price.

Other attractions include 16-oz. Kirin Ichiban drafts for $3 and Sake Bombs, $2, along with many Japanese touches on the menu: oysters, squid, seaweed, dumplings, and buckwheat noodles, just to name a few. And while Takeuchi likes the neighborhood feeling with his restaurant tucked away in a pleasant shopping center, he hopes people won’t overlook the place. “We’re right here at the corner of Kingston Pike and 40 West,” he says, “easy to reach, easy to park—we’re easy going.”
