One of Knoxville’s oldest restaurants, featuring fresh fish, pastas, home-style specials, an all-day weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Happy hour from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. The Bistro provides a classy atmosphere and a diverse menu, featuring both good old Southern cooking and more gourmet dishes as well. Live music four nights a week.

From the Yummm! Restaurant Guide:

Long-time cook Martha Boggs is now the owner of Bistro at the Bijou, which means all the great things about the old place stayed the same—and she’s added some new things that make it even better. On the still-great list is the live entertainment four nights a week, brunch served on Saturday mornings and all day Sunday, and the overall great atmosphere for kicking back before or after shows at the adjoining Bistro. And they still make the very best sandwiches, burgers, comfort food, steaks, pasta, and seafood.

What’s new, or at least enhanced, is Boggs’ focus on what she calls the “farm to table” approach. That means a seasonal menu that revolves around produce from Boggs’ own garden, and a focus on other locavore products, like meats from Laurel Creek Farms in Crossville. Just one example of the way the philosophy plays out on the plate: fingerling Yukon gold potatoes from Boggs’ personal plot roasted with chicken fat, oregano, and lemon juice.

There are loads of options to pamper health-conscious or vegetarian palate, too, from “criminally delicious” rosemary roast chicken to edamame hummus to yam fries, a fresh fish “Protein Plus Two” lunch, and vegan red beans and rice.

Every day, the Bistro offers different lunch specials which can be found on the website or in the restaurant itself. Brunch, featuring shrimp and grits, fried egg and cheese sandwiches, and $3.50 screwdrivers, bloody marys, and mimosas among other a la carte savories, is served Saturday mornings and all day on Sundays. Happy hour goes on Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m.

Says Boggs, who hails from Ducktown, Tenn. and has been in Knoxville since 1978, “I go out of my way to make dishes that others don’t—and it’s always stuff I like to eat.”

We’re glad Martha’s at the helm of the Bistro now, and that she’s still creating a menu like only she can.
