  • Taking Out Your Trash: Garbage trucks line up at the end of the day to dump their collected waste at the Chestnut Ridge Landfill.

  • Extremely Natural Gas: Methane collection wells, above, are drilled all over the landfill’s acreage. The gas is piped to the landfill’s engine room, above left, where it is converted into electricity, some of which is used on site and some of which is fed back to the power grid.
  • Holding Pattern: Leachate collection pumps suck the seepage out of the landfill before it can get into the groundwater and store it until it can be treated.
