William Gibbs McAdoo, the Knoxville lawyer and businessman whose astonishing career took him from the jail on Market Square to the Treasury Department, where he oversaw the birth of the Federal Reserve Board. He later played an important role in the Democratic Party’s nomination of Franklin Roosevelt.
