A rare photo of Adolph Ochs, about the time he was beginning his career as a Knoxville journalist. Later he worked in Chattanooga as a young man, and at age 38 bought a failing paper called the New York Times. The paper never had a “liberal” reputation until, during Ochs’ last presidential election as publisher, the Times endorsed Franklin Roosevelt in 1932.
