Comfortable Fit?

Knoxville is a small town.

Newly-minted U.S. District Judge Pamela Reeves shouldn’t have any trouble settling into a working relationship with her colleague, U.S. District Judge Tom Varlan.

Reeves and Varlan’s wife, Dani, were in the same Leadership Knoxville Class. Varlan was city law director for Knoxville and Reeves’ husband Charles Swanson was the City Council attorney. Swanson now has Varlan’s old job as city law director.

Reeves now has an income again. She had closed her law practice at the end of last year, unable to take on new cases while waiting to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate—a process that has taken over a year due to procedural squabbles between Democrats and Republicans.

Reeves joked to a friend that the hardest thing about settling into her new role thus far has been negotiating the security to get in and out of the Howard Baker federal building.
