Would-Be Judge to be Judged?

Lu Ann Ballew wants to sit on the bench in Jefferson County’s courtroom, but she has a hearing scheduled in that courtroom on Monday in which she is the defendant.

Ballew turned in a petition by the deadline to run for Sessions Judge, replacing the retiring Judge Ben Strand. The Board of Judicial Conduct has a disciplinary hearing scheduled for Ballew.

As a divorce court magistrate, Ballew received national attention after changing the name of a youngster in a paternity case from “Messiah” to “Martin,” saying it would be an undue burden on the child to have the name reserved only for Jesus Christ. The Board of Judicial conduct gave notice of a hearing on whether discipline should be applied and set the date for March 3, according to the state Supreme Court’s website.
