Another Johnson Opponent?

Jason Emert is another potential Republican candidate for House District 13 to oppose Democratic incumbent state Rep. Gloria Johnson.

Emert is vice-president of First Choice Medical and he lives in Sequoyah Hills. He has been in contact with members of the House Republican caucus and some members of the Knox delegation seeking support.

Johnson won the seat in 2012 when it was vacated by former state Rep. Harry Tindell, who retired. It is a seat that has a high priority for the Republicans in 2014 and will likely be one of the few races in East Tennessee that will receive extra effort. Johnson is a rising star of the Democratic Party and the Republicans would like to pick up the seat. Johnson, a teacher, has been a leader in criticizing some of the education reforms enacted by Republicans since the party took over the House and Senate.

Archie Ellis, development director for Habitat for Humanity, is also considering the race. Ellis ran unsuccessfully for City Council in 2001.
