Luckily for Blue Cross Blue-Shield of Tennessee, they had yet to mail letters to individual customers telling them their plans were canceled before President Barack Obama came out to announce such customers can keep their plans for another year.
That meant Blue Cross could assure customers they wouldn’t be canceled rather than have to scramble to recall the cancellation notices.
The state insurance commissioner will have to agree, depending on whether the president has the authority to reinstate the policies or not, and provide an exemption to the Affordable Care Act provisions. In the meantime, Congress is looking at legislation that would allow the policies to remain for those that want them.
The policies tend to be high deductibles with lots of exceptions for coverage in return for a lower premium. The Affordable Care Act was designed to eliminate such policies.
