Jones Draws an Opponent

Knox County Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones was considered a heavy favorite to win reelection but he is now being challenged by one of his former senior officers. Bobby Waggoner, who was chief of detectives under Jones, has announced and already has had a fund-raiser at Wright’s Cafeteria.

Waggoner and Jones reportedly had a disagreement over the running of the detective division. Waggoner, after a medical leave, retired from the department. Waggoner’s family were once very active in Knox County politics, though not lately. His grandfather, Bernard, was sheriff back in the 1970s and his sister Brenda was a longtime Sessions Court judge before retiring.
