Illness May Change Race

Jason Emert was considered the likely Republican to challenge Democratic state Rep. Gloria Johnson this coming year, though he may have to reconsider. Friends say he is battling a serious illness, requiring hospitalization. Emert is vice-president of a health care technology company and lives in Sequoyah Hills.

There is still a good bit of time before election season gets under way, however.

Archie Ellis had earlier considered a run for the seat but decided against it because it would take too much time away from his job at Habitat for Humanity and he has family obligations.

Johnson won the seat in 2012 after long time Democratic state Rep. Harry Tindell decided not to run again. The Republicans will likely make beating her a top priority next year.
