State House Democratic Caucus Chair Mike Turner clashed with state Democratic Party Chair Roy Herron at a meeting of the executive committee last weekend.
Turner was challenging Herron’s leadership and there was some expectation he would ask Herron to step down. But after a series of test votes it became clear that Herron had the support of a majority of the executive committee. Turner then announced that he would resign his post as leader of the Democrats in the Legislagture.
Turner confirmed Monday that he will resign, effective in January, because he cannot work with Herron.
There are members of the executive committee that feel Herron is too much of a social conservative to lead the party.
