Best of Knoxville 2013: Home & Garden

Best Garden Store/Nursery

Stanley’s Greenhouses and Plant Farm
It’s May, and that means one thing: geraniums. Which means only one other thing: Stanley’s. Easy access to Stanley’s is one of the best things about living SoKno (along with the lack of traffic of course), as this is easily the best nursery in town. The place has an interesting history—it was deeded to the Stanley family by William Blount’s half-brother Willie Blount in the early 1800s, and became one of the region’s largest wheat farms, as Stanley’s website helpfully explains. Then called Davenport Farms, it thrived for a hundred years before transitioning to cut flowers, which it sold on Market Square. Fifty more years or so passed before the modern nursery took shape—but when you shop there today, you’re shopping with the same family, on the same land, doing basically the same business. And you can really feel that deep connection—call it roots if you have to. They care about what they are doing. Take a look around and you can actually see the difference—the greens are greener, the blooms are brighter, and the geraniums are the most colorful in town. (H.D.)

Best Realtor

Anthony Edwards, Dean Smith
A graduate of Arizona State, Anthony Edwards has always appreciated the value of his hometown: “There was never a question about me coming back home after graduation—I never even considered staying out west. I’ve always loved Knoxville.” For nearly 14 years, Edwards has shared the love by helping other folks get settled here: “It’s nice to help people, and I enjoy seeing them get excited about a sale.” Although he handles some commercial properties, it’s residential sales that have filled up most of his time in recent years. An understanding of the market and what gives houses their worth as well as the ability to communicate those concepts clearly is part of what makes Edwards’ clients a happy bunch. As for any insight to the secret of success in the real estate business, “It probably sounds cheesy, but I think it’s just good customer service,” he says. (D.P.)
