Legislators to Paul: What Have You Done Lately?

When Tennessee voters approved a lottery, the state brought in highly-touted lottery expert Rebecca Paul to set it up and get it running and agreed to pay her $750,000 per year. She had done the same for the state of Georgia.

Several years on, legislators are wondering whether maintaining the lottery requires the same salary as setting one up. A routine vote of the lottery’s budget last week was rolled (delayed) while legislators think about it.

Look for an effort to set the salary of the lottery director to no more than the governor. (That is, if we ever have a governor who isn’t a millionaire who serves without a salary as our current and former governor have. That would be $170,000. But it comes with a house.)
