Scholarships Not Cheap

Contrary to popular belief, the University of Tennessee does not award scholarships to its football and basketball players. The UT Athletics Department awards scholarships and pays the university tuition for each of its players.

Since UT recruits nationally, much of the tuition the football program pays the university is much higher out-of-state tuition. Recruiting nationally also increases travel costs.

Coaches in recruiting-rich environments have an advantage over UT. Coaches at LSU, Florida, Alabama and Georgia can drive around and recruit in-state players.

In a report to the UT Board of Trustees recently, the Athletics Department said it paid UT $10 million last year in tuition costs.
