“I am against a man receiving an award for trying to destroy all safe places for LGBT students.”
—Marcel Neergaard, an 11-year-old activist in Oak Ridge who wrote an editorial on Huffington Post on June 1, posted a video on YouTube, and started a petition drive at moveon.org asking Michelle Rhee’s StudentsFirst to rescind its educational “Reformer of the Year” award to Republican State Rep. John Ragan. Last February, Ragan introduced the Classroom Protection Act, which critics say is a harsher version of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill he previously co-sponsored. StudentsFirst has declined to rescind the award.
UPDATE: StudentsFirst revokes Rep. Ragan's award.
