When stories surfaced in December 2011 and January 2012 about Trustee John Duncan III awarding unearned bonuses to himself and his employees, Craig Leuthold began calling on various people in the courthouse to solicit their support for his candidacy “should the position come open.”
His efforts paid off last week when the Knox County Commission gave him the job. Leuthold now is an incumbent positioned to run for the job next year.
But his inside track from being a former county commissioner may be an issue if he has a strong challenge to keep the job.
It also didn’t help Commissioner Richard Briggs’ campaign against state Sen. Stacey Campfield for him to have to explain on the News Sentinel’s front page that his vote for Leuthold wasn’t a conflict of interest, though Craig’s father Frank is his campaign treasurer.
