Oak Ridge Pastor Raising Funds for West Bank Documentary

Knox Crowdfunding Project of the Month

Shuhada Street

For the past three years, Oak Ridge pastor Steven D. Martin has been working on an ambitious documentary film: Shuhada Street: the world’s holiest war zone, which will focus on the street in the West Bank city of Hebron that separates its 170,000 residents and the 700 Jewish settlers who reside in the center of Hebron’s Old City. “In this one small place, all the problems of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict come into clear view: the trauma of violence, the memory of history, and the power of sacred space,” he writes on his Kickstarter project page. This may seem like a large assignment to take on, but Martin has an impressive filmography: Muslims in Appalachia, Islam in America After September 11th, and Theologians Under Hitler, which have all aired nationally on PBS stations. He is also president of Vital Visions, which helps fund productions to increase dialogue between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. With just a few days to go, he is seeking $15,000 to complete the film and pay for editing, music, rights clearances, and additional footage.
