When the extension of the James White Parkway is finally shot down [“Road to Ruin?” by Cari Wade Gervin, Dec. 13, 2012], can we begin the planning for removal of the parkway on the north side of the river? It goes nowhere, carries little traffic, devalues property near it, and is a barrier to the potential growth of downtown.

New York, San Francisco, and Milwaukee have torn down highways. Oklahoma City is doing it. Madrid, Spain, and Seoul, South Korea have done it. All of those demolitions brought new life and new economic activity to their cities.

It’s time for the James White Mistake to go. Open up all that land for apartments, townhouses, parks, and businesses of all kinds. Then you’ll really see downtown Knoxville take off.

So… the James White Parkway “is a barrier to the potential growth of downtown”? You clearly know nothing about the area of which you speak.

But, it looks like I can count you in that group of individuals that expects traffic from South Knoxville/Knox County to GO AROUND because you don’t like having the burden of our traffic!

Thank you for providing another example of the let-them-eat-cake approach to South Knoxville’s traffic problems!
