State Rep. Joe Armstrong is in the radio business.
The Knoxville Democrat has purchased 1040 AM, a 10,000 watt station on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Five Points. The programming is rhythm and blues for the daytime channel, and features nationally known radio host Tom Joyner in the mornings. Joyner, the most influential black radio host in the country, is heard in over 100 markets nationwide.
Armstrong also has a gospel station on 1580 AM and is looking at an FM purchase in the spring.
Armstrong has represented his East Knoxville district since 1988 and was the longtime chair of the powerful House Health and Human Services committee when the Democrats held a majority in the state House. He is the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus. He is also the president of the National Caucus of Black Legislators and as such will be attending the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
