Term Limits for School Board Members?

The proposal to make school board elections partisan is still hanging out there. But there is a little-noticed possible amendment to any legislation making the races Republican or Democrat or Independent. County Commissioner R. Larry Smith has proposed that the enabling legislation also make school board positions term-limited. It would be up to the legislators whether to include the term limit suggestion in the bill.

Partisan elections and term limits will require legislation, it can’t be covered in a charter amendment. Term limits in Knox County cover most county offices, except for the school board and court clerks.

A bill to make school board positions partisan is sponsored by state Rep. Bill Dunn; state Sen. Becky Duncan Massey, the Senate sponsor, has asked for a resolution of support from the County Commission before moving the bill. The issue was tabled at a Commission meeting on Monday.
