Knox County’s judges would rather not get into the middle of a fight between the county law director and the daily newspaper. They have recused themselves from hearing the News Sentinel’s challenge to County Law Director Richard “Bud” Armstrong’s withholding of a group of e-mails.
There will be a status hearing in Blount County next week before Circuit Court Judge David Duggan.
The newspaper has asked for copies of certain e-mails sent over the county server. Armstrong contends that they are personal e-mails, not official business, and thus not public records. The newspaper disagrees.
If the case goes to trial it will be in Knox County, but Duggan would preside.
