Former Vol Coaches in Big Game

The current Tennessee coaches will be at home this bowl season, but it doesn’t mean some Vol coaching staff veterans won’t be represented. Three former Vol coaches will likely be on the sidelines for the national championship game.

Former assistants Randy Sanders and Jay Graham are on the Florida State staff, a team expected to play for the national trophy. UT recruited Sal Sunseri from the national champion Crimson Tide team. After he was fired he also joined the staff at Florida State, and will be at the big game.

While at Tennessee, under Derek Dooley, Sunseri’s defense was widely regarded as the worst in school history. At Alabama and Florida State, Sunseri has been a defensive line coach.

For the former Vol coaches at Florida State to get to the title game, they will have to beat another coach, this one from the Vol glory days. David Cutcliff, longtime offensive coordinator at UT, is taking his Duke team to the ACC championship game to face Florida State. Cutcliff’s team won 10 games and their division of the ACC. The last coach to do well at Duke was a guy named Steve Spurrier.
