The state Department of Health has sent letters to 50 doctors asking them to explain their excessive prescriptions of narcotics. They were notified that an examination of prescriptions of narcotics revealed that these doctors were “out of the norm” in authorizing opiates.
The Department is starting to drill down on data collected from drug stores on drug prescriptions. District attorneys and sheriffs have testified to the Legislature that meth and the abuse of prescription drugs are the biggest drug problems in the state.
A survey by the Health Department found that the majority of doctors have not had training on the dangers of opiate abuse from over-prescribing.
