The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will have to cover the costs of any money expended to locate a “megasite” along Interstate 81. After farmers objected and refused to sell land for the proposed project, it was declared dead.
The Jefferson County Economic Development Oversight Committee said the $442,311 in seed money for the project will be left with the county and none would be used for project expenses. County Commission had authorized the money to launch the project.
The Save Our Farms and Homes group opposed to the site had demanded an accounting of the money approved by the County Commission.
Since some options had been secured on some of the property, it is likely the Chamber will have to eat whatever money was spent.
