In somewhat of a surprise on Tuesday, the Knox County Commission appointed Commissioner Tony Norman as its new chair. Political insiders were predicting a win for Vice-Chairman Brad Anders to replace outgoing Chairman Mike Hammond, but Norman upset Anders in a 6-5 vote.
Norman’s tenure on Commission has not been without controversy, but he said during the meeting that he would “tone down” his “vitriol.” Norman is also no favorite of Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, but after the meeting Burchett said he hoped to work through his differences with Norman and “find common ground.”
Commission also appointed R. Larry Smith as its new vice-chair. He topped Anders in a 7-4 vote.
