Ruthie Kulhman says she has been advised to get out early and get a lead in her campaign to be the next chair of the Knox County Republican Party. She has told friends and supporters she is running for the post. She says current chair Ray Jenkins is term-limited and Phyllis Severance has declined to seek the post.
Severance, who serves as first vice-chair, has been a mainstay of the local party and is the veteran of numerous winning campaigns. She would have been a shoo-in for the post.
The new chair will be elected at a party convention likely in February or March.
Kulhman lost a race for County Commission to Finbarr Saunders, who was then defeated in the next election. Saunders is now on City Council.
