Time for Gruden Again

It’s time for the Jon Gruden rumors again. But this time we hear they really mean it.

Given the turmoil in the University of Tennessee coaching ranks in recent years, Gruden’s name comes up as a possibility every time a football coach is being hired. The problem in the past has been that no one has been willing to pay what it would take to lure the sportscaster back into the coaching ranks.

Gruden was a graduate assistant at UT in 1986; his wife Cindy is a UT grad. He was the youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. He is now a commentator for ESPN’s Monday Night Football program.

UT has paid millions to coaches not to coach and an athletic director to not direct in the last four years and the program is ailing financially. We hear the big donors are determined to spend what it takes if Derek Dooley is not retained after this season to get a “name” coach to compete with Nick Saban, Mark Richt, and Will Muschamp.
