The offer on the table for Jon Gruden to be the next Vols football coach is $5 million a year for 10 years. The academic side of the University of Tennessee is aghast at a commitment of $50 million for a new coach while paying off the old one, with the football program running in the red.
It may result in a showdown between Athletics Department chief Dave Hart and the big donors versus Chancellor Jimmy Cheek.
Gruden has been a fan favorite in the “who will replaces Derek Dooley” speculation. The former UT assistant coach who went on to win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is now an analyst for ESPN.
Dooley was fired by Hart on Sunday afternoon after the Vols were blown out by Vanderbilt on Saturday night 41-18.
