The Weekly Plan-It: Thursday, May 31-Monday, June 4

Highlights of the week ahead

Thursday, May 31

Jon Reep

8 p.m., Side Splitters Comedy Club. 16-$20.

A lot of Southern comedians who try to mine “redneck humor” mostly cause a lot of cringing among actual Southerners. But Reep just aims to tell it like it is rather than exaggerate stereotypes.

Friday, June 1

Land Trust Day

6-8 p.m., Mast General Store.

This Foothills Land Conservancy fund-raiser accentuates the importance of land trusts for conservation. Stephen Lyn Bales will speak about the ivory-billed woodpecker; the event continues all day Saturday with conservancy representatives answering your questions.

Saturday, June 2

100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville Annual Gala

6 p.m, Crowne Plaza Hotel. $60.

The civic group honors Knoxville College at this annual benefit, which raises money for scholarships.

Sunday, June 3

Circle Modern Dance

8 p.m, Relix Variety Theatre. $12 - $15.

CMD’s annual spring performance: Spectre.

Monday, June 4

County Commission Vote on Budget

5 p.m., Main Assembly Room, City County Building. Free.

County Commission will vote on Mayor Tim Burchett’s proposed budget. But the big debate centers on Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre’s request for a $35 budget increase vs. Burchett’s insistence that property taxes must never be raised. Should be a long one.
