Why would a women’s softball team need a stadium, three press boxes, four VIP suites and 6,000 square feet locker rooms? Those were some of the questions asked when the University of Tennessee launched a fund drive for the women’s softball stadium.
It must be gratifying for Sherri Parker Lee, a local philanthropist, when the 1,600 seat stadium that bears her name was sold out last weekend for a Lady Vols softball tournament. It was Lee’s seven-figure contribution that kicked off the fund-raising that led to construction of one of the best showcases for women’s college softball in the nation. It has become the site of the tournament regionals for the women’s World Series and it is appropriate since the home team Lady Vols are consistently in the mix.
The national recognition for the women’s softball team has been some solace for Vol fans who have watched the debacle of the football program and the rebuilding effort of the men’s basketball program.
