Chambers for Higher Taxes

The Chamber of Commerce has gone on record supporting a tax increase for increased teacher pay and infrastructure. That would be the Nashville Chamber of Commerce supporting a 13 percent hike in Nashville property taxes proposed by Mayor Karl Dean.

The Knox Area Chamber Partnership is lobbying the Knox County Commission to pass a budget proposed by the school board and Superintendent Jim McIntyre that includes $35 million in additional funding. The proposal is opposed by County Mayor Tim Burchett, who says the additional money would require a tax increase.

There is a move among chambers statewide to put education as a priority for job growth and industrial recruitment. Knox Area Chamber Partnership CEO Mike Edwards is on the state school board.
