Quote of the Week: '...we should show kids the proper way to roll cigarettes or shoot heroine...'

"It is funny how sex ed was the only area of health where we did not advocate abstinence as the goal. It was always along the lines of ‘Well they are going to do it so lets show them the best ways how’. By that logic we should show kids the proper way to roll cigarettes or shoot heroine or mix Bacardi with coke."

—State Sen. Stacey Campfield, commenting in his blog (May 7) on the update to the state’s abstinence-based sex education law, which now includes fines for teaching or promoting “gateway sexual activity.” However, the state’s previous law already included mandates for teaching abstinence in Lifetime Wellness curriculum for high schoolers: “Any such course in sex education shall in addition to teaching facts concerning human reproduction, hygiene and health concerns, include presentations encouraging abstinence from sexual intercourse during the teen and pre-teen years.”
