GOP Gets More Primary Action

Uncontested primaries have likely depressed the Democratic vote for the Aug. 2 election.

In early vote totals, participation in the Republican primary is five times higher than in the Democratic primary. Early in the week the totals were just under 5,000 for Republicans and just under 1,000 for Democrats.

Early voting continues through Saturday.

Things may pick up for the general election. Knox County Democratic Party Chair Gloria Johnson will face the Republican primary winner in the state House district being vacated by Democrat Harry Tindell. The district has been redrawn to be slightly more Republican than Democratic, but the House Democratic Caucus is cautiously optimistic about keeping the seat.

Anthony Hancock, a former Tennessee Vol football player, is also challenging Republican state Rep. Steve Hall in the general election, but the district at stake is heavily Republican. But at least Hancock has name recognition.
