Lloyd Daugherty, the head of the Tennessee Conservative Union, was a consultant for the Americans for Fair Taxation effort a few years ago. He worked with and spent time visiting with an Atlanta talk-show host named Herman Cain. They were both promoting a national sales tax and the abolishment of the income tax.
Daugherty has been in touch since the “Herminator” dropped out of the presidential race and will be bringing him to Knoxville March 3 to keynote the annual Reagan Day Dinner. The pre-primary dinner will feature a conservative straw poll on the Republican presidential primary. The TCU, celebrating its 30th anniversary, will present a Conservative Leader of the Year award to House Speaker Beth Harwell, who has been carrying a bill to reduce inheritance taxes for the last 10 years, which is likely to pass this year with support from Gov. Bill Haslam.
The dinner will be at the Crowne Plaza.
