Jon Gruden could have said he wasn’t interested in the job of University of Tennessee football coach three weeks ago and saved Vol fans a lot of angst. He didn’t because he was discussing the job with UT boosters about the terms of a multimillion-dollar contract.
Thus, when Gruden finally decided not to take the job, he canceled an interview with UT Athletics Director Dave Hart and Gruden’s agent had deniability to assert he had not talked “to UT” about the job.
