In these politically turbulent times in which we live, we must always be aware of the threats to our security all around us. Perhaps more dangerous than terrorists themselves are terrorist sympathizers, who allow terrorism to lurk in our neighborhoods and find safe harbor to rest, recuperate and plan the demise of our society and our children. This is why Americans, and especially Southerners, need to be aware of and vigilant about one of the most prevalent and dangerous trends in our great nation: Confederate sympathy. These foul, anti-American activists proudly display on their cars and in their homes symbolism associated with a group which sought through violent means to destroy the United States of America, and no organization has ever been as effective at depriving Americans of life and liberty. By current estimates, the American Civil War led to more loss of American life than Naziism, the Viet Cong and al-Qaeda combined. To celebrate this conflict or its perpetrators is an insult and a danger to every American. Sympathizers ought to be carefully monitored by the Department of Homeland Security, or at least detained in Guantanamo Bay indefinitely so as to protect our freedoms and liberties.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever read in a newspaper! Why do print this garbage?
I cannot beleive this C. Long has ever read a history book or anything pertaining to the Northern War of Conquest or anything about A. Lincoln and still write this junk.
I ask again, why do you print such garbage?

Mr. Charles Long, by his comments, appears to be from the North or is what used to be called a scalawag. His knowledge of history appears to be sadly lacking as well. Southerners have always been the first to respond when this nation has come under attack. Southerners are as patriotic as any other people in this nation - maybe more so. The first president of the U.S. was a SOUTHERNER. Mr. Long, if you wish to debate the patriotism of Southerners, especially Knoxvillians, I suggest you contact members of either camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans or chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Knoxville or surrounding counties. I am a proud Southerner and veteran of the USAF when did you serve our nation sir? Sorry you feel those of us who do not support the current occupant of 1600 PA Ave Washington, D.C. are terrorists; but you see peaceful objection is our right under the constitution.

I thought this was a late April Fools Joke, but apparently it is not. Does the hatred and lies this person writes not violate your terms of use agreement? I would think something like this would not get posted. I don't know if I'm more offended by the insults or the person's ignorance of basic history. It is so very sad to live in the South and have to see this lack of civility displayed.

This piece is not intended to be taken too seriously. It is a satire of contemporary political discourse and the modern approach to terrorism as well as a criticism of the idea that the deaths of over 600 000 Americans ought to be taken lightly. The historical information contained herein was gleaned entirely from lectures at a fully-accredited university run by the state of Tennessee. Finding that the founding principles of the Republican Party are valid, the author takes into consideration that he is a scalawag of some sort. Those particularly interested in history will note that Tennessee was the only state to allow its citizens to vote on secession. The majority of East Tennesseans voted in favor of remaining in the Union, but were outdone by citizens of West and Middle Tennessee. Please excuse the author for being proud of his heritage as a Knoxvillain. Having no idea how Obama got brought into this, the author submits for your consideration that the first successful US Presidential assassination was carried out by a Confederate sympathizer.

This is one sick person. I cannot believe that your newspaper allowed this to be printed. This could be interpreted to insight violence against anyone who celebrate their heritage. Last time I checked, we still have freedom of expression in the US, although we are slowly losing it because of the ignorance of people such as the writer of this letter. He needs to learn a whole lot more about history, the real history, not this political correct junk that is taught in most public schools and universities. Read the real documents not someone's opinion. We are not asking you to celebrate our heritage just leave us alone while we celebrate ours. God Bless the South!!!
