State House Clerk Joe McCord has moved his family back home to Blount County, primarily to put his kids back into a better school situation. The family did not adapt well to moving to the capital. McCord does not plan to leave his powerful post as a senior staffer for the state House, but will commute to Nashville.
McCord spent 12 years as a member of the House representing Blount and part of Sevier County. He did not seek re-election and his colleague and friend Speaker Beth Harwell made him clerk when the Republicans took over.
McCord’s move has prompted rumors that the former legislator (and protector of mountaintop-removal mining) might be a candidate for Blount County mayor in two years. McCord said he has been contacted by some people in Blount County, but he is not sure if he wants to go back into elective office.
