Best Restaurant - Tomato Head
Twenty years on and deep into a downtown renaissance, and still nobody does it like Tomato Head. For casual and fresh lunch, brunch, or dinner featuring everything from huevos rancheros, burritos, and sandwiches, to the most inventive pizza menu in town, all served up in a warm, well-designed setting, the venerable Market Square spot is Knoxville’s favorite. Mahasti Vafaie’s vision for a hip, vegetarian-friendly downtown bistro featuring fresh ingredients in unexpected combinations was a bold one when the restaurant, originally called the Flying Tomato, opened on an otherwise mostly moribund Market Square in 1990. It’s still a winning formula in 2011, as Tomato Head’s sweep of nearly every conceivable category for which it was eligible attests.
