Indie electro-pop quartet Johnny Astro and the Big Bang walked away with the grand prize at the second edition of the Square Room’s Sound Off competition earlier this month, beating out more than two dozen other local bands.
The group, which formed last summer, won the final round on March 2 over Dave Dykes and the Grateful Hearts, the Big Deuce, Madre, the Hot Shot Freight Train, and the Gentleman Conspiracy. Each of the finalists had won a preliminary round against four other local bands. With the win, Johnny Astro and the Big Bang have earned recording time at Rock Snob Recording Complex, an opening spot at an upcoming AC Entertainment concert, $400 of band merchandise from Nouveau Graphics, up to $500 in gear from Rik’s Music, airplay on WUTK, and a professional video recording of their finals performance.
