Tim Tipton founded the new regional educational non-profit Anna’s Angels in memory of his mother, Anna Mae Norton Robinson, who had climbed out of poverty in Western North Carolina as a young woman and emphasized the value of education until her death in 2008. Anna’s Angels provides scholarships for East Tennessee and Western North Carolina students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford college.
The scholarships are funded through the Anna’s Angels Thrift Store, now open at 2808 Sutherland Ave., but the group will supplement the store next month with the Jazz Jam fund-raiser at Cherokee Mills on Friday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. The all-local lineup features Kelle Jolley, Kukuly and the Caravan Jumpers, the Larry Vincent Group, MTN Trio, and Nancy Brennan Strange. Tickets are $20 and are available at the store.
