Gov. Bill Haslam certainly thought being a mayor was a good qualification to be governor—he also seems to think it’s a good qualification for a lot of other state jobs.
Haslam has appointed five current or former mayors to posts in his administration. Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey will be deputy governor. Dale Kelly, the mayor of Huntingdon, will be his legislative liaison. David Purkey, recently the mayor of Hamblen County, will be deputy of Homeland Security. Franklin Mayor John Schroer will head the Department of Transportation. Finally, Jim Henry, the Commissioner of Intellectual Disabilities, is best known for his years in the Legislature, but he is also the former mayor of Kingston.
