Tennessee's Rankings in the United States Peace Index

Only Louisiana ranked lower than Tennessee in the first-ever United States Peace Index, created by the international think tank Institute for Economics and Peace based on statistics indicating “absence of violence.” Here are some of the numbers that landed us at 49 overall, with one being most peaceable (an honor that fell to Maine):

High school graduation rate (2008): 35

Those without health insurance (2008-2009): 31

Life expectancy at birth (2007): 43

Teenage pregnancy rate (2008): 44

Infant mortality rate (2007): 44

Teenage death rate (2007): 42

Household income at or below poverty level (2009): 43

Labor force participation rate (2009): 42

Number of children in single parent families (2009): 40
