Don’t Dismiss the Old City

I was pleased to read Matt Edens’ story “Fables of the Reconstruction” [cover story, March 24, 2011], and enjoyed the variety of views in the interviews, but he was a bit too dismissive of The Old City’s early bloom. This group of under-financed dreamers proved to Knoxville in their eight-year sojourn that downtown revival was possible, desirable. The psychological change it created in the perception of what could be made the growing success of our past decade achievable.

To downplay the early Old City relative to what has blossomed along Gay and on Market Square is like dismissing your first warm, lingering kiss with the woman who later became your wife and the mother of your children.
