Iconic Lakeside Market to Close

The bait, beer, and sandwich shop on Concord Road at Northshore was a remnant of the days when Southwest Knox County was mainly a quiet country place to go fishing. Lakeside Market, “West Knoxville’s original country store,” is closing at the end of September. The cinder block shop has been run by Margaret Stansbury for 40 years, but we gather it’s a good deal older than that. There’s a Phillips 66 sign out front, though Stansberry stopped selling gasoline a long time ago--but at this writing it’s still a good place to get a baloney sandwich with mustard or some bobbers, spinners, and a sixpack. We used to call that a summer afternoon.
